New York – "It is terrific that New Jersey’s highly respected state Supreme Court ruled that loving, committed LGBTQ couples should have the many rights and privileges necessary to protect their families. It is unfortunate that they did not choose to take the final step and grant full marriage equality to all families and have instead charged the legislature to 'fix the problem' ” said Marriage Equality New York Co-Executive Director Cathy Marino-Thomas.
“The decision is a giant step toward fairness. We are proud of the courageous couples who offered the truth of their lives as loving families to secure the freedom to marry for all LGBTQ couples in their state,” said Robert Voorheis, Co-Executive Director Marriage Equality New York. “With the courts decision not to take the final step toward equality, we now look to the legislature to work to protect all families by allowing equal access to existing marriage laws.”
"This decision is a step forward nationwide in the movement for LGBTQ couples to gain the over 1,000 federal rights and the hundreds of state rights that come with marriage, but, unfortunately, there is still a lot of work to do" said Marino-Thomas.
"We will not be content until full marriage equality for all families is the law of the land in this country," said Voorheis.
Marriage Equality New York is an all inclusive organization whose mission is to secure the right of all LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transgender, Queer) couples to enter into legally recognized Civil Marriage with all the benefits and responsibilities that entails through education and promotion of awareness.

Lawmakers Must Now Take Action in Saying ‘I DO’ to Marriage Equality
For Immediate Release

(New York, NY) - Today, New York’s highest court ruled against Marriage Equality for the LGBT community’s families. Marriage Equality NY (MENY) is disheartened by this decision and intends to continue to build awareness and educate the public on this extremely important issue facing our community. MENY will be hosting various public forums throughout the next several months to discuss what rights and benefits marriage confers and how those excluded from marriage are not protected under the law equally. MENY invites all interested parties to attend these educational forums aimed at illuminating the public on why all citizens should be able to obtain a marriage license.
MENY is saddened and frustrated with today's opinion, but has not lost hope that it can carry out its mission of helping the citizens of New York to gain a better understanding of the importance of equal protection through marriage equality. With the introduction of the “I DO” awareness rings, available at events or on our website, we hope to gain more attention to this crucial issue.
MENY will continue to work on our next steps in gaining marriage equality through the Gottfried-Duane Right to Marry bill introduced in conjunction with MENY. These bills look to clarify the laws that were created to protect, not exclude and discrimination against, the LGBT community. MENY is issuing a call to action for the “right 2 marry” coalition to reconvene as soon as possible. This coalition was created in conjunction with Gottfried-Duane’s offices, to further these bills in the State Assembly and Senate and has been in a holding pattern pending the court decision. Some groups that had signed on to this coalition are Empire State Pride Agenda (ESPA), Lambda Legal, Metropolitan Community Church of NY (MCCNY) and many more leaders within this community. Founded in 1998, Marriage Equality New York is the Oldest Organization in New York working solely to secure the freedom and the Right of same-sex couples to enter into legally recognized civil marriage, having all the federal and state benefits and responsibilities which that entails.
